伊歐最初是待在一支巡回表演的馬戲團(tuán)，那是它從小到大唯一的歸屬，后來它被迫離開，跋涉在波蘭和意大利交界的鄉(xiāng)間時又逃走，既遭受到殘酷的狀況，也遭遇到溫暖的情況，而在這一路當(dāng)中，它觀察到人性的愚蠢和勝利。在伊歐的旅途中，它同時受到各種人物的幫助和阻礙，包括年輕的意大利牧師 (洛倫佐·祖佐洛 飾) 、女伯爵 (伊莎貝爾·于佩爾 飾) 及喧鬧的波蘭足球隊(duì)等。
