2004年的一天，司法浪人佐伯健太郎（三浦春馬 飾）在外婆的葬禮上得知，他和外公賢一郎（夏八木勛 飾）沒有任何血緣關(guān)系，其真正的外公宮部久藏（岡田準(zhǔn)一 飾）早已在二戰(zhàn)末期死于神風(fēng)特攻行動中。此后不久，健太郎被姐姐慶子（吹石一惠 飾）叫上去調(diào)查宮部的事跡，他們走訪了宮部當(dāng)年的戰(zhàn)友，誰知許多人都將外公斥為“帝國海軍第一懦夫”，其執(zhí)行任務(wù)時即使看著戰(zhàn)友犧牲也絕不卷入戰(zhàn)局。老兵們的評價讓姐弟倆頗受打擊，但隨著調(diào)查的深入，他們發(fā)現(xiàn)宮部擁有最高超的飛行技巧，他深愛著妻子（井上真央 飾）及女兒，并發(fā)誓無論如何要回到家人身邊。堅定著這一信念，宮部不惜放棄帝國男兒的尊嚴(yán)，而他的處事方式也不知不覺影響著各期的戰(zhàn)友們。伴隨著老兵們的講述，健太郎注視著外公迎來了最后的時刻…… 本片根據(jù)百田尚樹的同名小說改編。
